NWCG Flagging Standards

COLOR

PURPOSE

Yellow-Black Striped Flagging:

Hazard Identification (snags, drop offs, etc)

"Hot" or Fluorescent Pink* flagging with the words "ESCAPE ROUTE" in black with black dots.
NOTE: The color lime-green should no longer be used to identify safety zone or escapes routes. HOWEVER, crews with colorblind individuals may wish to mark escapes routes and safety zones with both hot pink AND lime green flagging.
  To mark a safety zone or an escape route.

"Killer Tree" Flagging

 

Use To Identify Trees That Pose A Danger To Firefighters and Others

Other colors and specialty flagging: fluorescent orange, blue, white with blue spots/strips, red, etc   Used to mark/identify numerous items including: trails, roads, archeological sites, supply areas, etc. Specialty flagging may delineate wetland boundaries or property lines or a "Do Not Cross" area.

* Flagging is currently available for federal and state wildfire agencies through the NWCG NFES Geographical Area Caches. All others including cooperators should purchase flagging commercially or through GSA.
