Living on the Edge in Florida

Teacher's Guide

The Living on the Edge in Florida Teaching Module is designed to help teachers introduce students to a very real problem facing our society- the conflict between human development and natural systems. Living on the Edge in Florida is about the natural role of fire in our ecosystems and protecting homes and neighborhoods from wildfire.

The Florida Division of Forestry uses dozers to combat wildfire. The CD-ROM (with over 3 hours of color pictures, video clips and animated graphics) encourages critical thinking as it helps students understand public safety issues, ecosystem management, community planning and individual responsibility. Interactive exercises challenge students to balance cost, fire safety and social acceptance as they evaluate the wildfire hazard of neighborhoods and design “Firewise” communities. Living on the Edge in Florida is a valuable resource for classroom use or independent study.
