Did You Know...
- Florida has over 16 million acres of
forests, representing nearly half of
the State’s land area.
- Annual output or sales impacts in the
Florida forest products industry
exceed $16.6 Billion, creating 133,475
jobs and generating more than $581
Million in local, state and federal
taxes (excluding income taxes).
- Florida has 33 State Forests and 3
National Forests.
- Florida’s forests shelter more than 100
species of animals including
Threatened and Endangered species
such as the Florida Panther, Black
Bear and Red Cockaded Woodpecker.
- Over 5,000 products we use everyday
are made from trees.
- Each American uses the equivalent of
one 100-foot tree every year.
Class Activity:
- Diagram a tree with the class and explain how tree products can come from wood, bark, sap, leaves, roots and cellulose.
- Give each student an old magazine with plenty of advertising pictures.
- Have each student cut out five items made with tree products.
- Ask students to identify tree products they cut out and what part of the tree they think each came from.
- Let students paste pictures on large poster paper, 1 poster for each part of the tree that products come from (wood, bark, sap, leaves, roots and cellulose).
