WELAKA STATE FOREST

Mud Springs Recreation Area

“Amazing! Found a gem in the Trailwalker Program!”
This is how one forest visitor described their visit to Mud Spring Trail located in Welaka State Forest. Looking for a place to get out, hike, and enjoy the Fall weather? Hoping to see wildlife along the hike to a scenic location? If so, then Mud Spring is where you want to be. The 1.7 mile loop trail will guide you through scrubby flatwoods, mesic flatwoods, xeric hammocks, as well as a floodplain forest.

Mud Spring Interesting facts about the spring:

  • The spring forms a circular pool about 45 feet in diameter.
  • The spring was formerly dammed to produce a swimming area.
  • Mud Spring has an approximate flow of 13,750 gallons/hour.
  • The spring forms the head of Mud Creek. Mud Creek flows for about ½ mile to Little Lake George which is part of the St. Johns River.

Once you arrive at the spring you will find a pavilion with picnic tables. It is a great place to just sit and relax while overlooking the spring. Another option to enjoy is the short boardwalk at the beginning of the spring run. After taking in the sights and sounds of the spring you can enjoy the leisurely walk back to the trailhead. You never know… you might even come across a bald eagle or great horned owl. The mud spring hiking trail is one of the trails listed in Trailwalker program. The John’s Landing Trail, also on this forest, is another Trailwalker trail. Make a day of it and enjoy both trails on your visit to Welaka! Hunting is not allowed on this small educational forest, so there is no need to plan around hunt dates.
