The primary emphasis of Florida’s Urban and Community Forestry (U&CF) program is on providing technical, financial, and educational resources to support the development and continuing viability of local urban forestry programs. These resources are targeted to meet the needs of local governments, non-profit organizations, primary and secondary schools, colleges and universities, and the general public. Delivery is accomplished through partnerships with the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Science (IFAS), the Florida Urban Forestry Council (FUFC), and other organizations and entities.

Urban and Community Forestry Grants

Arbor Day

Arbor Day is a nationally-celebrated observance that promotes the benefits of trees in the urban environment and encourages tree planting and care. Founded by J. Sterling Morton in Nebraska in 1872, National Arbor Day is celebrated each year on the last Friday in April.

Individual states conduct their own Arbor Day celebrations at various times of the year. Florida has one of the first Arbor Day celebrations in the nation, on the third Friday in January. In 2009, Arbor Day will be celebrated on January 16. Over 100 communities in Florida celebrate Arbor Day, either as a stand-alone event or in conjunction with some other occasion. Check with your local city officials or school department to see how your community is celebrating Arbor Day. If you would like to do your own Arbor Day celebration, visit the How to Celebrate Arbor Day website.

"There is no aristocracy in trees. They are not haughty. They will thrive near the humblest cabin just as well as they will in the shadow of a king's palace. There is a true triumph in the unswerving integrity and genuine democracy of trees."
